Download / Installation
- I started the installer, but nothing happens
Especially on older notebooks, and in case of installation from cdrom the preparation step can take several minutes. - I just installed Monist, but whenever I try to
log on I get a "wrong password" / "no connection"
message, what's going on?
You must be on-line for first login, as your authentification data must be downloaded.
You might be off-line, our server might be down, you might have received wrong authentification information. - I just upgraded Monist, but whenever I try to
log on I get a "wrong password" / "no connection"
message, what's going on?
In case you reinstalled MySql, there might be a database problem: Look for a file named my.ini in the windows directory, and (re)move it.
Content / Usage
- I just installed Monist, but there's no content at all.
You have to download it first: Select the entry "Download from server" in the main menu, and choose the courses / units you are interested in.
Authoring
- How do I create my own course?
Please consult the on-line help via the help menu, or ask for a preparatory training.
As the online help is not yet complete, feel free to report special editing problems, and ask questions about particular problems like 'how to pack your applet into a link'. - I would like to use my big simulation in monist courses.
Please ask us for help to create, and provide a version of your software, that can automatically be downloaded, when needed in a monist unit or course. - Can anyone publish units on the Monist server?
In principle yes, but we get informed about any publishing per email. This is our first step into reviewing, and quality assurance. - I'd like to
publish my courses for the attendees of a particular
seminar / class only.
Ask us to create a user group for this purpose. Afterwards you will be able to publish your content for that group only. - I have published my course twice. How to remove
the duplicate entry on the server?
There is no way yet, but asking us to do that. - I'm afraid to loose my units. Is there any way to create a backup?
You can save units, and courses into a file using the entry "Export" in the context menu of the navigator tree. There is an "Import" entry too ...
You can make a complete backup by saving (zipping) the directories C:\mysql\data, and C:\Programs\Monist\data (or rather those with similar names).
Server / Firewall
- I can configure my router/firewall, any ports I should forward/open?
Monist uses ports 5858, and 5959 (tcp, outgoing).
The talker uses ports 2809, and 2810 (tcp, outgoing). - I cannot use ports 5858, and 5959 ...
Under these circumstances there's no way to connect to our server.
You can change the ports for off-line use. Please ask for instructions how to do this. -
There is already a mysql database running on my
system.
If you are familiar with sql, have a look into the textfile resources/mysql.sql
Otherwise feel free to ask for instructions how to prepare mysql for Monist. -
We have got a shared database in our cippool /
intranet workgroup.
Please ask for instructions how to set up and configure Monist for shared database/rpc usage.
